抹茶生産量日本一を誇る西尾には、京都大文字焼きのルーツや足利家のルーツがあり、元京都の印象がある。茶祖といわれる中国八世紀の陸羽らの唐風文化が遣唐船で伝えられ、1191年栄西が宋から茶の実を持ち帰り、その茶を京都栂尾高山寺の明恵上人が栽培して広め、実相寺開山の聖一国師が西尾に初めてお茶を伝えた。茶畑の広がる上町は日本最古の三河万歳が伝承される里でもある。

Nishio area, Japan’s top producer of Matcha green tea has a root of Kyoto Daimonji yaki and Ashikaga family, and gives an impression of old Kyoto. Kento envoy ships brought Tang-way culture such as Rikuu’s tea culture, who was called chaso bone in China in the 8th century. In 1191, another chaso Eisai brought seeds of tea from Song and Myoe Shonin, who was the temple master of Kyoto Tuganoo Kozanji, cultivated the seeds and tea became popular. After then, Shoichi Kokushi who founded Jissoji temple, brought tea into Nishio area. Kamimachi is a village has a vast of tea garden and is where the Japan’s oldest Mikawa Banzai has been handed down.
